First Grade Exam Review
Review at home the following concepts:
1- Consonant Spelling: Teacher will dictate to the student the sound and they have to write which consonant and vowel it is. (r,j,w,e,v,y,z,u,q)
2- Teacher will tell the students what the picture is and they have to write the beggining letter.
For example:
_____Z____ |
3- Fill in the blank with the correct high frequency word. Sentences are very easy for them to understand. Teacher reads them the sentence. They have to answer it by themselves. Many lack the skill of analyzing and looking for clues within the sentence. I am constantly teaching them how to do it. That is very important with this type of exercise. Learning is not memorizing, its being able to analyze.
(he, is, with, three to, where, for, me, go)
4- Organize the days of the week in order. We do this in class, even with a song. I will give them the list of the days, they have to write them in order.
5- Circle the make believe pictures and draw a box around the real pictures.
Feel free to check out the workbook exercises. Most of my exercises are taking from there but with different pictures and sentences.

First Grade Parents
Parents,
Beginning next week the student will be using the next reading book in the list. On the side of the book look for the one that says Unit 1. It is hard cover. Ready, Set. Read can be left at home. From this book on the class and assignments are going to be a bit different and accelerated. Read, Set, Read got them started in reading. Now the student will be working in the continuation of the book. I still have students that have difficulty identifying letters and sounds. I will be contacting the parents of this students. Extra attention at school and home is a must. It is all about team work and giving them a great example at home too of how important it is to learn English. Also, please I do understand all about busy schedules and how hectic family life is but please set at least a few minutes to read to your child. Stories and illustrations can spark the student's interest a lot. Have them read to you aloud, you read to them, share the reading you a few lines he or she a few lines. Ask questions, discuss illustrations, etc.

Homework:
Parents,
The homework will be changed for Thursday since tomorrow morning the students will be working on their Learn Aid exams. The only thing the students have to bring to class in pictures of the natural disaster and information regarding safety tips to follow during a disaster. NO student has to write any information, no pages maximum or minimum. A few sentences and tips is more than enough. You can even print it out from the computer and internet. The purpose of the assignment is for the students to sit in a group, read what each brought and together make a Safety Tips Poster. This assignment will help them work on a very special skill which is to analyze and work in groups, share ideas, etc. There is no need to panic or add to the homework. It is very simple. I do apologize if the page in the "aviso" notebook wasn't clear enough and I do understand where the doubts would arise from.
Hope this makes it better!
Thanks for your understanding,
Teacher Matias
* Please, if you have any type of doubts and questions about the English class, an assignment for my class, exam, quiz or project feel free to contact me. During the morning I am usually in the office. Ask for me. The student's homeroom teacher cannot answer them, they are not pertinent to her classes. :)

How can I help my children study at home?
Hey Parents,
How can I help my children study at home? Some of you have asked me this question. I have given some techniques but here are a few pages that can give you a wider look at techniques and ideas. Remember that the way that every child learns is different and we as parents have to learn which way that is. Speaking to the teachers and looking for information can help you learn and understand more about the topic.

Reminder...
Parents,
It is very important that students come to school with their basic materials. Pencils are a must. I have a lot of students with no pencils, eraser, coloring books, crayons, scissors, glue, etc. I share my crayons ans materials with them but I have noticed that lately I have a great amount of students without them and I have not enough for all of them. I always talk to my students about organization and responsibility. Let's make sure they can put those values to practice. It's all about team work!
* Please notice that in the weekly I have added the pages that the students will be working in class. I have a lot of students coming to class with those pages already made. The purpose of adding the pages in the weekly is for parents, students and tutors to know the concepts and pages that they are working and if a student is absent or there is an incomplete assignment they can then complete it at home. Homework to be done at home is announced in the homework announcement section in the weekly. If a student still doesn't have the workbook you can use the weekly as a guide for photocopies or you can contact me for the complete section of pages to be done in class. Again parents its all about team work.
